Leland was born on December 13, 1915 at Kramer, Nebraska to parents, Henry and Carrie (Schneider) Rippen. At the age of nine, Leland's family moved to the Culbertson community, where he would graduate from Culbertson High School with the Class of 1936. He continued his education at McCook College. In 1940, Leland moved to San Diego and worked for Consolidated Aircraft Company as an aircraft assembler. He entered the U.S. Navy on June 2, 1942 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945.
On August 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Genavieve Joanna "Jennie" Loreman at Hastings, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm near Culbertson and would remain there until Leland's retirement in 2002.
Leland was a member of the Culbertson VFW. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, gardening, and was an avid Husker fan.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Carrie Rippen; wife, Jennie Rippen; daughter, Corby Rippen; brothers, Willard, Harlan, Alfred, Irvin, and Gordon Rippen; sisters, Blanche Brown and Merylin Fassler; and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Rippen, Maxine Poore, and Frary Rippen.
Survivors include his daughter, Lorre and husband, Gregg Felker of O'Neill; grandchildren, Bryan Felker of Geneva and Breanna Felker of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Jackie Rippen of Culbertson; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Visitation will be Friday, March 3, 2017, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Graveside services will be Saturday, March 4, 2017, 1:30 p.m., at the Culbertson Cemetery with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy and the Culbertson VFW and American Legion Veterans.
