John Frederick Friebus
John Frederick Friebus, son of John Karl Friebus and wife Marie Katharina nee Scholl, was born Sept. 10, 1850, in the village of Fischer in the Volga region, Russia, and soon after then he was brought to holy baptism in the Evangelican [sic] Lutheran church.
At the age of 15 he renewed his baptismal covenant through his confirmation in the Evangelican [sic] Lutheran church at Niedermonjou.
In this confession he remained true to his end and always proved himself a faithful member of the Lutheran church here at Wilson.
In the year 1874 [1873], he was united in marriage with Katherina Elizabeth, nee Schmidt. To this happy union nine children were born, namely three sons and six daughters. Three of these, one son and two daughters, have gone beyond before him. Also one grandchild.
In the year 1877, he decided to leave the old country and make himself a new home in the new world. But through certain circumstances he was not given the privilege to come to this country as he had planned, and had to make his home for seven years in Cape Town, Africa, from where he emigrated to this country landing here at Wilson, Kansas, in and around which he has made his home since.
He leaves to mourn his loss his sorrowing widow, two sons, John Christ and Fred Friebus of Wilson, four daughters, namely, Mrs. Charles Whitmer, Mrs. Louis Whitmer, Mrs. Alex Wollert of Wilson, and Mrs. Charles Garrett of Orion, Kansas. Also thirty-six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, as well as four sisters, namely, Marie Katherina Friebus, Mrs. George Schuber, Mrs. Anna Katherina Friebus, and Mrs. Dave Anschutz, as well as a host of friends and relatives.
He died the eighth day of November at four o'clock in the morning, bringing his age to 80 years, 1 month, and 20 days. He was buried on Sunday, November ninth, having his funeral service at the Methodist church by Rev. Wm. J. Lind, and interment in the Wilson cemetery.
