Football (Soccer) Player, Governor in the Dutch East Indies. Born in Purwakarta to a Dutch East Indies colonial administrator, Kuneman showed an aptitude for football in his youth. In 1904, he started playing for HBS in The Hague. In total, Kuneman, a defender, would play 54 games for HBS, scoring one goal and becoming champions of the Netherlands in the 1905-06 season. On October 25, 1908, he made his debut for the Dutch National Team in a match against Sweden, which the Dutch won 5-3. Kuneman's football career was cut short in 1909 when he returned to the Dutch East Indies to pursue a career as a colonial administrator. Starting as an Assistant Controller in Cheribon (nowadays Cirebon), Kuneman climbed the ranks until he was named Governor of East Java in 1933. He served in this position until 1936 when he was named a member of the Council of the Dutch East Indies. During World War II, the Japanese occupied the Dutch East Indies, and as such, Kuneman was taken prisoner in an internment camp in Ambarawa. The terrible conditions in this camp saw his condition worsen. Only a few days after the Japanese surrender, Kuneman succumbed to his poor health, still interned in the Ambarawa camp.
