Gerald Albert Artzer, 84, Topeka, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Artzer worked for McCarter Truck Line in 1936 then worked for Santa Fe Railroad at the shops from 1938 until he went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, from where he retired in 1976 after 26 years of service.
He was born June 3, 1914, in Topeka, the son of Albert and Veronica Allendorf Artzer. Mr. Artzer was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 2608, the James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Moose Lodge No. 555. He was a past member of United Rubber Workers of Americal Local 307 and the Goodyear Retirees Club.
He married Alice Lewis on June 4, 1936, in Topeka. She survives, of the home.
Survivors also include three sons, William A. Artzer, Topeka, Paul Edward Artzer, Newnan, Ga., and Thomas Anthony Artzer, Rossville; three daughters, Carol McDiarmid, Burleson, Texas, Mina Studley, Tyrone, Ga., and Adele Johnson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Wilbur Artzer and Eugene Artzer, both of Topeka; two sisters, Wilma Sams, Topeka, and Dorothy Sanchez, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Artzer will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the Brennan- Mathena Funeral Home, where a Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. today, followed by a parish rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Council No. 2608 Rosary and Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony at 7 p.m.
