Stephan immigrated to the United States with his family in 1846, departing the Port of Bremen in August aboard the ship Elisabeth Denison and arriving at the Port of New Orleans on Dec. 24.
Stephan was married to Anna Angela Heckemeyer on Aug. 28, 1866, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, Missouri, and they had nine children.
Stephan died of apoplexy and Bright's Disease when he was 93 years old.
