Anna was born in Abild, Halland, Sweden, on April 26, 1850, and was baptised on May 5, 1850. She was named Anna Carolina, after a previous daughter who had died after just one year in 1847.
When she was three, her family moved from Abild to Ränneslöv. Her father died at the age of forty when she was five.
At some point, Anna emigrated to the United States, home to at least three of her siblings. Anna's sister Johanna and her husband Peter Hansen emigrated in the 1870s, after living some time in Copenhagen. They settled in Morris (Shawano County), Wisconsin. Anna's brother Lars Olof also emigrated to the U.S., in 1882, and settled in Morris with his first wife Hadda and their four (he remarried after Hadda died, and had four more children with his second wife Oline). Anna's brother Sven August also emigrated, and settled initially in Morris as well.
