DEAN, WILLIAM
Husband of
1. Parthena (Martha) nee BAILEY – m. 29 Aug 1796 in Litchfield Co. CT
2. Rebecca A. (Rumsey) MULNER – m. 26 Mar 1837 in Trumbull Co. OH
3. Ada PEARCE – m. 29 Dec 1842 in Trumbull Co. OH

Note: For many years, due to a typographical error, Dean Hill Cemetery boasted a Revolutionary War soldier, William Dean (1774-1847). As can be seen by his birthdate this is not possible. It should be noted that William's father, Benjamin Dean, was a Revolutionary War veteran and he is buried in the Canfield Village Cemetery a few miles away.

Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 1898 Mar 25 - Article No. 60
by Dr. Jackson Truesdale (Excerpts)

"...In the fall of 1810, William Dean and wife, with five children, his aged father and mother, and a family of five persons by the name of Green, started from Litchfield county, Conn., on their weary way to the west, arriving in Canfield Oct. 10, 1810, finding shelter in a log cabin standing across the street from the present residence of Henry M. Hine. We are not informed whether he continued to live in the cabin up to the time of building his brick residence on "Dean Hill" or not. He may have preceded the brick by a cabin nearby. We are told, however, that in some 10 or 12 years after his arrival in 1820 or 1822, this brick residence was erected."

"... My personal knowledge of Mr. Dean was [as] that of a boy living nearby, who occasionally went to [Mr. Dean's] home on an errand. He was tall and spare in flesh, dressed in the home- made attire of the times, his features were roughened by toil and exposure; but he treated the boy with kindness and consideration, and this is a good key to character. A man that treats a boy rudely and arrogantly merely because he is a boy, is not always to be trusted - a boy is not necessarily an enemy of the human race."

"Martha, the first wife of Mr. Dean, after prolonged feebleness, died Sept. 13, 1836, aged 64 years. In 1837, Mr. Dean married Mrs. Rebecca Mulner, who died June 3, 1842, and again late in life he married Mrs. Ada Pearce of Lordstown, and he himself died in 1847. He was the father of eight children - [six] by his first wife - namely Orpha, Hiram, Orsemus, James, Benjamin and Belinda, and [two] by his second wife, Rebecca and Rachel."

"Seldom have we families where so many of its members exercised so good and wholesome an influence upon society as did that of William Dean."
J. TRUESDALE, 1898
(Added by Jennifer Neff. Edited for length by George Dean)

Note: Hist. of Wm. Dean Family lists 9 children by 1st wife Parthena "Martha" Bailey, those above plus William Bailey Dean and Belinda Dean. gd
