May died from a ruptured appendix. Her parents (my great-grandparents) had sent for a surgeon from Chicago, Illinois, and before he could get to see her it was too late. She died on the operating table in the family's living room.
(Growing up on our family's farm this was the story told to me by both my grandparents and as well my parents.) Her Portrait still hangs on the big living room wall.
