Long-time Sterling resident John A. Monheiser, 88, of 330 N. Sixth Ave., died Tuesday at Sterling Regional MedCenter.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday at St.Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Blanco officiating.
Recitation of Rosary is 7 p.m. Thursday at Chaney-Walters Funer al Home. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Monheiser was born July 25, 1903, in Gabel, Russia, to John and Constance (Bellendir) Monheiser.
He came to the U.S. with his family when he was a year old, settling in Kansas. Several years later the moved to Sterling, where Mr. Monheiser attended school. On Jan. 27, 1925, he married Mary Kloberdanz in Sterling. After his marriage he worked for Union Pacific Railroad until 1934.
He started farming in the Sterling area and farmed until retiring in 1970, when the Monheisers moved to town.
For several years he worked as a custodian for Northeastern Junior College. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a 47-year member of Knights of Columbus and an honorary life member.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond of Blue Springs, Mo., Lawrence of Potter, Neb., and Ken neth of Sterling; five daughters, Irene Lauer of Greeley, Rose Mary Piel of Stoneham, Carolyn King of Kingman, Ariz., Dorothy Stieb of Iliff, and Edna Kippes of Denver; a brother, George of Sterling; two sister, Susan Bellendir and Barbara Schneider, both of Sterling; 35 grandchildren and 41 great-grand children.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 5, 1978, a son, Albert, on Aug. 26, 1990; and a grandson, Randy Stieb on Oct. 7.
Chaney-Walters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
