Paul Frederick Hertzke was born in Halhasberg-Pozen, Germany on August 2, 1881. He came to America with his mother and sister when he was one and half years old.

At an early age , Paul began to work away from home. When he was 19 he helped with the grade for the railroad between Germania and Rake. He worked as a farm laborer and did tiling until he married.

Mattie Leigh, daughter of Edward Henry and Effie Ethel(Sperring) Leigh, was born on December 1, 1888 in Delaware County, Iowa where her grandparents settled when they emigrated from England. The family later moved to Thompson High School, Mattie took the six weeks teacher training course at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls; she then taught three years in the Hebron and Lincoln township schools.

Paul and Mattie were married on June 15, 1910 at her parents home in Thompson. Paul drove a horse and buggy to the wedding and in this he and his bride came to their first place.

They planted their first garden in July; Paul made the plow and pulled it while Mattie Held the handles! They lived on two different rented farms; during the time Elsie was born on July 2, 1911; Maynard on April 10, 1913; Raymond on Feb. 19, 1915; and Otto on June 15, 1918. Elsie died in January of 1913 of diphtheria.

In 1917 Paul and Mattie bought 80 acres and started building a house and barn. On March of 1918 they moved into their own home. Later they purchased an adjoining 80 acres.
Ruth was born on the home farm on Feb. 17, 1920, and Charles on September 2, 1922. Charles and his wife took over the farm.
