Mrs. Sophie Philippi, widow of Gerd W. Philippi, was born January 14,1862, at Diepholz, Hanover, Germany and was received in the fold of Christ by infant Baptism. She came to America in 1878 and made her home at El Paso, Illinois.
On February 18, 1880, she entered holy wedlock with Gerd W. Philippi. The marriage was solemnized at Bloomington, Ill. The union was blessed with six children, three girls and three boys, all living except one of the girls.
The family came to Nebraska in 1885, and first lived on a farm northwest of Belvidere until 1890, then on the farm one and one-half miles southwest of Bruning. Mr. Philippi retired in 1916, and took up residence in the town of Bruning. He died last July and because of the infirmities of old age the widow found it convenient to close her house in the town and to live partly with her daughter, Mrs. H. W. Bruning, and partly with her son, Theodore. She was staying at her son's place wen it pleased the Lord to call her home, after a short illness on January 7th, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 23 days.
Grandmother Philippi was a faithful church member, a good Christian wife and mother, who reared her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. As such she will be remembered by her daughters, Mrs. H. W. Bruning and Mrs. H. Springer of Bruning; by her sons, William A. of Ohiowa, Fred M. and Theodore H. of Bruning; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many more distant relatives and a large number of friends.
Funeral services were held at the home of H. W. Bruning and Trinity Lutheran church in Bruning. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery beside her deceased husband.
