William came to the United States with his step-grandmother Elizabeth Meinhardt on the Ship "Grosser Kurfurst" which landed in NY 16 Nov. 1907. Family tradition says that he had pink eye when the Ship "Breslau" sailed from Germany and was not allowed on the ship with his parents. Henry Meinhardt also had pink eye so it was decided that Elizabeth would stay with the children while the rest of the family sailed to America. Presumably the "Grosser Kurfurst" was the next ship to sail for America that had space for them. The family met at the home of John Henry Meinhardt in Cleveland, Ohio. From there they went to Wyoming to work sugar beets and then to the Thumb area of Michigan to work sugar beets.
