TWO WOMEN BURNED TO DEATH IN MOTOR CAR
Companion is rescued from flaming auto

One victim was bride in October 1931; cause of tradgedy unknown

Mrs. Mueriel Smith, 22 wife of Charles Smith, manager of the Kroger Store at Lapeer Ave & 13th St., and Smith’s sister Miss Elizabeth R Smith 24 cashier of the J. C. Penney Co. store, were burned to death about 10 pm. Monday when the care in which they were driving crashed into a tree 2 miles north of Emmett on M21 and caught fire.

Miss Eleanor Smith 14 of 1429 Frances St. another sister who was in the car is in Port Huron hospital today after narrowly escaping death. She suffered a fractured leg, scalp wounds and burns about the face and legs. She will recover hospital attendants said today.

The younger girl was rescued from the flaming reckage by William Foley Emmett Twp. Farmer a passing motorist.

Deputy Sheriffs and coroner Albert A. Falk who were notified responded immediately. Coroner Falk arrived 22 minutes after the call with 2 fire extinguishers furnished by the city. When he arrived the two bodies were half creamated. Both ladies are burned beyond identification he said.

Deputy Sheriffs C. A. Black, Orval A. Patterson and George Gangeon, all of Port Huron and deputy sherriff Thomas Brandon, Emmett were at the scene of the accident soon after it happened.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived at 1524 Jillett St. The were married in October 1931.

The three women were returning from Flint when the accident happened. Mrs. Smith and Elizabeth Smith had gone to Flint to bring Eleanor Smith who had been visiting there to her home in Port Huron.

The explanation of the accident could be explained today as there were no witnesses. Coronor Falk believes Mrs. Smith believed to have been driving, lost control of the car as she neared the sharp curve on M21, and ran straight into a tree. The car was demolished. It struck the tree with such a swift impact that a truck had to be used to extricate it.

Mrs. Smith was born in Croswell, she is survived by her husband Charles Smith. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shulters and brother Raymond Shulters all of Port Huron and two sisters Patricia Ann Shulters, Port Huron and Mrs. Helen Annas, Detroit.

Miss Smith is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, three brothers, Charles, William, Samuel, all of Port Huron and 4 sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Falk, Flint, Mrs. Sophia Wirtz, Miss Eleanor Smith, Miss Mary Louise Smith all of Port Huron.

Joint funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Falks Funeral Residence. Rev. Jonathan Tanner pastor of first congregational church, will officiate for Mrs. Smith, and Rav. Jacob Appel pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will officiate for Miss Smith. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.

The J.C. Penney Co. Store will be closed from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday to permit employees to attend the rites.

Double funeral held for victims of auto accident.

Joint funeral services were held this afternoon in Falk's residence for Mrs. Muriel Smith, 22, wife of Charles Smith, manager of the Kroger Store at Lapeer Ave and 13th street, and Smith's sister, Miss Elizabeth R. Smith, 26, cashier for the JCPenny company's store here, who were burned to death Monday night when the car in which they were returning from Flint crashed into a tree near Emmett and caught fire.

Rev. Jonathan Turner pastor of First Congrational Church officiated for Mrs Smith and Rev. Jacob Apple pastor of St. Paul’s Luthern Church officiated for Miss Smith. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery.

The J.C. Penney Company Store was closed during the funeral services to permit employees to attend.

Miss Eleanor Smith 14, who was rescued from the burning car and who suffered a fractured leg and thigh is in Port Huron Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Smith, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shulters.
