William and Mary lived in Freeport until his death in 1942. Her sister Tillie then moved in with her and they lived together until Tillie suffered a mental breakdown in 1946 and was moved to the Illinois State Hospital in East Moline, IL. After Tillie moved out, Mary sold her house in Freeport and moved in with her brother-in-law and sister, Henry and Lizzie Siemen Dittmar, on their farm in Elizabeth until her own death in 1950.
