After the death of both his parents he farmed the family farm with his married brother, August and his wife Berniece, until they sold the Woodbine farm in 1944 and moved to another farm south of Hanover, IL. After August died in 1951 Herman remained on the Hanover farm with Berniece as his caretaker until about 1959 when she placed him in a nursing home in Warren, IL. He lived in the nursing home until he died.
