Services Held for Arlene Stender, 79

The funeral service for Arlene J. Stender, 79, formerly of the Cumberland area, was held Saturday, April 5, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Ms. Stender passed away Thursday morning, April 3, at Colonial Manor in Anita, where she was a resident.

Conducting the service was the Rev. Clarence Landis of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Music was provided by Rhonda Fager, organist. Pallbearers were Eleanor Heathman, Arlo Stender, Shirley Chester, Richard Chester, Karen Oathoudt, and Kent Stender. Mary Stender, Margo Chester, and Lela Boos were in charge of flowers. Interment was in the Victoria Township Cemetery south of Massena. Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic was in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of J. Peter and Julia Larson Stender, Arlene was born on February 11, 1918, southwest of Massena and was reared there. Her mother died in childbirth. As an infant she was taken in and cared for by her maternal uncle, Andrew Larson, and his wife, Georgina, before she returned to her father and siblings. She graduated from the Cumberland High School in 1936. Arlene kept house for her father and they moved into Cumberland in 1940. She lived with her oldest sister, Mabel, in Atlantic a number of years and lived at the Cass County Care Facility, before entering the Colonial Manor in Anita. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Della Holcomb and husband Albert of Cedar Rapids and Helen Chester of Massena; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Stender of Massena; also a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mabel Boos and Alice Stender; and two brothers, Jamie Stender in 1905 and John Stender.
