=============
MERLE R. RIENSCHE was born near Sterling on Mar 23, 1919 to Alfred and Florence (Bomberger) Riensche. Merle was the fourth of five children born to his parents. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Arnold. He attended rural school District 67, west of Cook. He and his family lived near Helena church, where they farmed for many years. The Helena church was part of his early life. He rang the bell and worked as a janitor during his youth. Merle was confirmed there and was a member there until Grace Lutheran was built in 1951. He served on the church council, taught Sunday school, was a Sunday school superintendent, and sang in the Grace Lutheran church choir for many years. Merle graduated from Cook High School in 1937. He walked to and from school twice a day (16 miles total) in order to be able to play in the band. Merle talked about working for a $1.00 a week making hedge posts and carrying them to piles during the dirty thirties. After graduation from Cook high school, he worked on the farm with his family until he was drafted into the service July 9, 1941.

He met Marjorie Meade, one Saturday evening in Tecumseh during Aug of 1940. They double dated with her sister to a dance in the dance hall in Johnson. This was the start of a storybook romance. Merle gave her a diamond on Valentine's day 1941 and they were married on Mar 29, 1941. The Lord blessed them with 55 years of life together. Merle served in the Army Antiaircraft Artillery during the war. He was stationed first in Hawaii for 14 months. He then returned to Texas, where he trained the crew that he served with in Europe theatre.

Over the years many friendships that Merle made have endured. He has been active as a VFW and Legion member and active officer of the Legion. Merle returned to the Cook area in July of 1945 and resumed farming in 1946 near Cook. In 1956, he and Marjorie purchased their farm north of Tecumseh and moved there. They and their family worked hard to make a living in the following years. Merle worked for Cook Grain and Lumber for several years, for Fred Frey as a carpenter for about four years and for Tecumseh public power until his retirement. Merle lived on the family farm until his death on Aug 1, 1996. Interment was in the Tecumseh Cemetery.
