Ferdinand and Mary Ann met and lived in Addison, Illinois. They were married November 22, 1874 in St Mary's Catholic Church in Cottage Hill, (now Elmhurst), Illinois. This is about twenty miles due west of downtown Chicago. Their wedding was witnessed by Francis Witt. We believe Francis is Ferdinand's half brother. Research indicates Ferdinand may have not been a Catholic and the Bishop granted a special dispensation for them to marry in the church.

When the railroad was extended to Pierce City in 1870 it attracted many people due to the availability of land. Henry and Frank were born and baptized in 1872 and 1875 in Illinois. Francis Witt (half brother to Ferdinand) was a sponsor for both. Shortly thereafter, Mary Ann told her family she was moving to "Pursey City" on the train and she had no idea where it was located. Francis also moved to the Pierce City area about the same. Mary Ann wrote to them when she got to Pierce City so they would know where to find her. Anna was born in Barry County, Missouri in 1876.

According to the 1900 census, Ferdinand and Mary had nine children and eight of them were still living in 1900 (more on this ninth child later). Their farm in Missouri was later known as the Raymond Witt farm. Seven of their children had families of their own. Two children, Frank and Anna, married a brother and sister in the same Friday family. In all, Ferdinand and Mary had thirty-seven grandchildren. The first grandchild was born in 1896 and the last one in 1925.

The first part of this story is on Ferdinand's site.
