In Memoriam
Johann Carl Friebus was a son of Johann Christian Friebus and his wife Agnes, nee Lichtner. He was born on October 8, 1868 at Thelausa in Russia. In the Lutheran Church of this place he was consecrated to the Lord in holy baptism soon after his birth by pious parents who brought up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. His childhood days he lived in Russia.
In 1878, our departed brother emigrated with his parents to South Africa. In this country he grew to manhood. In Cape Town, South Africa, he received his confirmation instruction and was confirmed in 1882 by the Rev. Hahn whom he held in high esteem as long as he lived.
For twelve years the deceased lived in South Africa. In 1890, the Friebus's emigrated once more, this time to America, the family settling at Wilson, Kansas. For several years the departed lived with his parents at Wilson, and then came to Phillipsburg where he found work with the Rock Island Railway as a section foreman.
On February 15, 1903, Johann Carl Friebus was united in marriage with Katharina Barbara Preuss, the Rev. John Pirner performing the ceremony at Stuttgart. The young couple settled on a farm in Dayton Township where the deceased lived the remainder of his days. This union was blessed with six children, five sons and one daughter, all of which survive the father.
Johann Carl Friebus, one of the older members of our congregation, was a faithful Christian who took his religion seriously. For years the departed was ailing with a chronic bronchitis. About six months ago his ailment took a severe form reminding him of his approaching departure. He did not pass up the thought of death and eternity but prepared to meet his Lord. Friday night (March 3,) his condition became alarming in such a way that every one could see his life was ebbing away. On Saturday, March 4, in the afternoon at 3:20, at the age of 70 years, 4 months, and 26 days, Johann Carl Friebus fell peacefully asleep, as we confidently hope, in the faith of his Lord and Savior whom he served all his life.
He leaves to mourn his departure his bereaved widow, Mrs. Katharina Friebus; six children, Carl, Paul & family, Agnes, Theodore, Leonard & family, and Walter; three grand children; one sister Mrs. Anna Schulz; and many other relatives and a host of friends. His earthly remains were laid to rest on the cemetery of our Emmnuel [sic] Lutheran Church Wednesday, March 8. May he rest in peace!
