Leo Hutmacher Dies of Gunshot Wound

Leo L Hutmacher, 46, formerly of Dieterich, was found dead of a gunshot wound in the head in a woods near Decatur Wednesday, following an altercation in which relatives reported he fired on and wounded his wife, Ona, 36.

According to coroner Harold Brintlinger, Hutmacher was an apparent suicide. A 2 gauge shotgun was found with a discharged shell in one barrel was found at his side. An inquest was held Friday.

Mrs Hutmacher is in Decatur-Macon County hospital with wounds to her left arm and leg. Her condition is considered critical. The arm was amputated.

Relatives reported that the shooting occurred at the home of Mrs Hutmacher 's sister, Mrs Delbert Shafer, near Decatur, where he had gone to discuss their separation.

Surviving Mr Hutmacher are three daughters, Rose 17; Dorothy 14; and Sandra, 7, who reside with Dorothy Culp of near Effingham.


Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: frank of Effingham, L N and Edward of Dieterich, Joe and bill of South Dakota, Mrs Culp, Mrs Louis Buennenmeyer, Mrs Joe Lustig, and Mrs Lawrence Lustig, all of Effingham.

Hutmacher had not resided in this area for about five years.

Graveside services were held Saturday at 11 am in Calvary Cemetery, Decatur.
