WASECA HERALD - Apr. 19, 1907
Death of Frederick W. Mahler. Friend Mahler, well and favorably known by every one in this community, passed from earth to heaven Sunday night or about 2:30 o'clock Monday morning. He had been in poor health for a long time, a sufferer from cancer of the stomach. About a year ago he had an operation performed at the Mayo hospital at Rochester, and for several months thereafter he felt so much better that he had strong hopes of entire recovery. But last fall the dread disease returned and it was soon learned that there was no hope for his recovery. Mr. Mahler thereupon resigned himself to his fate and heroically faced the inevitable with the courage of true philosophy and Christian resignation. He set his "house in order," and with much cheerfulness and great good sense manfully awaited the change. Child's history of Waseca county records the fact the deceased was born in Neinburg, Hanover, Germany, July 27, 1857, and that he came to America in 1874, landing in New York, May 6th of that year. He came directly to this county, landing at Meriden station, May 11, 1874. He arrived here empty handed and at once engaged as a farm laborer. For seven years he worked as a farm hand and by economy had saved up a considerable sum of money. He then purchased what was known as the old Parmelee farm, in Woodville. He married Miss Sophia Beese, of Deerfield, Steele county, May 11, 1881. They at once entered upon farm life for themselves and soon had one of the best improved farms in Woodville. Here they lived until the spring of 1898, when Mr. Mahler sold his farm to Mr. Edward Beese, his brother-in-law, and bought Mr. W. H. Roesler's half interest in the then hardware firm of Goodman & Roesler. In 1900, Mr. Mahler bought Mr. Goodman's interest and carried on the business alone until 1903, when Mr. William Habein bought of him a half interest. Last year Mr. Habein sold back his interest to Mr. Mahler, since which time deceased and his son, George, have continued the business. He probably died without an enemy. He was a most just and upright man, with charity toward all. His life and conduct were above criticism or reproach. He had been for many years an active member of the German Methodist church of this city and died in that faith. His funeral which was largely attended, was held on Wednesday afternoon. The meeting at the residence was at 1 o'clock, and services at the German M. E. Church at 2 o'clock, Rev. Daniel Pfaff officiating. His remains lie buried in Woodville cemetery, near the south shore of our charming Clear Lake. Peace be to his ashes.
