WASECA HERALD (MN.) - Aug. 16, 1945
GEO. MAHLER PASSED AWAY ON SATURDAY
Suffered Heart Attack At His Store During The Afternoon
Another eminent figure is gone from the business circles of Waseca and the entire community feels sorrow and regret at the untimely passing of George E. Mahler, who was hardly past the prime of his life. Mr. Mahler, who was 61, suffered a heart attack on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at his place of business in the Mahler Hardware Company, an institution that has been in existence in Waseca for two generations. His frightened employees called a doctor and he was taken to the Memorial Hospital where he died at 9:10 p. m. Saturday, August 11. In respect to his memory the entire business district of the city was closed during the hours of the funeral ceremony which took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church.
The impressive ceremony was conducted by Rev. G. E. Martin, who gave the funeral address, assisted by visiting clergymen. Two former pastors of the Waseca Methodist Church, Rev. B. F. Kock, retired, of Faribault, and Rev. W. E. Shields of Red Wing, spoke briefly but earnestly of their respect for Mr. Mahler. Rev. R. H. Mercer of Waterville read the scripture lesson, and Rev. Ernest D. Groenig of Faribault said the last solemn words of benediction. Edw. Priebe, Frank Kiesler, Ernest Graben, Chris Krueger, Henry c. Nelson and E. C. Buland carried their fellowtownsman to his last resting place in Woodville cemetery.
George Edward Mahler, one of Waseca County's native sons, was born in Woodville on August 1, 1884, the son of Sophia and Frederic Mahler. Early in his life the family moved to Waseca and Mr. Mahler Senior went into the hardware business here in 1898. The father died in 1907 while George was still in high school. He gave up his schooling and shouldering the responsibilities of the family, took over the running of the business. He has been engaged in the same enterprise ever since.
On Nov. 24, 1910, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Pfaff, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Daniel Pfaff. Three children were born to them: a daughter, Kathryn, Mrs Oliver Soeldner; and two sons, Donald E., who lives in Faribault, and George, Jr., who is a Corporal in the armed forces in the Pacific. The mother passed away on Jan. 9, 1933.
He was married to Mrs. Edythe Barrie of Minneapolis on Jan. 19, 1935, at the Andrews Presbyterian church in Minneapolis. She and the three children survive him. Also surviving are six grandchildren, one brother, Wesley of Winnebago; and five sisters, Miss Freda Mahler of Madison, S. D., Miss Louise Mahler of Minneapolis, and Mrs. S. H. Pfaff, Mrs. Alvin Koechel and Mrs. Ben Senske, all of Waseca.
Mr. Mahler was a civic minded person intensely interested in the welfare and activities of his community, especially in the affairs of the church of his faith. He was an active member of the official board for years and also sang in the choir for many years.
Sorrowing relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Leverenz, Richard and Ben and Mrs. Ole Benson of Windom; Mrs. J. H. Johnson, Mrs. Stanley Olson, Miss Mary Casey Fred Rockwell, Henry Sundeen, cecil Riley, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Kenyon, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Balestia, J. Balestia, Miss Doris Loper, Mr. and Mrs. R. H.
