PIONEER LADY DIED SUNDAY
Mrs. J. L. Lengel, 81, a resident of the Burlington community for the past 62 years, passed away at the hospital in Burlington Sunday. Mrs. Lengel had been ailing for the past several years, her condition becoming gradually weaker until about a month ago, when she became seriously ill. Mrs. Lengel homesteaded with her parents on the Republican river north of Burlington in 1885, and she was one of the few remaining true pioneer ladies of this area. Elizabeth Gutting Lengel was born in Patterson, New Jersey, on Jan. 31, 1866. She was the daughter of Christian and Barbara Gutting. In 1870 the family moved from New Jersey and took up their residence in Omaha, Neb., where they lived until 1885. From there they moved west and became one that settled about 20 miles north of Burlington. Here they took a tree claim and farmstead. On Dec. 13, 1893, Elizabeth Gutting was united in marriage with Jonathan L. Lengel. To this union was bom five sons and two daughters, Joseph C. Lengel of Burlington; Anna L. Mills of Alden, Kan.; John B. Lengel of Englewood, Colo.; Charles H. Lengel of Windsor, Colo.; Ida C. Vincent of Hudson, Kan.; Levi C. Lengel of Wray, and Benjamin L. Lengel of Burlington. Mrs. Lengel was baptized in infancy, and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith. For the past number of years she was a member of the Brethem church. On Sept 21, 1947, Elizabeth Lengel departed this life, She had reached the age of 81 years, 7 months and 21 days. The many years-of her life were spent in of her family and friends. Besides her loving husband and her five sons and two daughters, she leaves to mourn her demise 12 grandchildren, many other relatives, and a host of friends. Funeral services wars conducted at the Hendricks mortuary in Burlington Wednesday morning, Bep t 24, st 11 o'clock, with the Rev. L. C. Johnson of the American Lutheran church officiate tag. 1990 centennial farms award: must have been owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years, must be at least 160 acres, or if smaller have gross yearly sales of at least $1000.

Elizabeth Gutting, 20, came from Patterson, New Jersey, to Yuma county in 1886, and homesteaded a ranch by herself for seven years before marrying Jonathan Lengel.
