Services held for Joseph C. Lengel
Funeral services for Joseph Christian Lengel were held Saturday, May 2, at 2:30 p.m., at the United Methodist Church, Idalia, with Rev. Dan DeHart as officiant.
Jim Sharp was soloist for the musical selections, accompanied at the organ by Betty Moellenberger, Linda Fairchild played a special piano number in honor of her grandfather.
Casket bearers were James Lengel, Ronald Lengel, Denis Lengel, Mark Lengel, Tim Lengel, Dave Lengel, Tod Lengel, Ray Richards, Roger Richards, and Donald Richards.
Honorary casket bearers were Wes Adolf, Emmett Wise, Rick Slater, Gene Gersten and Craig Fairchild.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Burlington.
Joseph Christian Lengel was born eldest to Jonathan Levi Lengel and Elizabeth Gutting Lengel on Nov. 20, 1894, in Arapahoe County, Newton, Colo. On April 29, 1981, at the age of 86 years, five months and 10 days, he departed this life at the Ranotta Nursing Home, Wray, where he resided for five days.
He lived on the original homestead 21 miles north of Burlington near the Republican River. He was educated at the Sod School House in southern Yuma County, one mile north of the Lengel home.
Joe was drafted into military service of World War I during the years 1917-1918 and was honorably discharged in February of 1919.
On August 24, 1919, he was united in marriage to Mary May Hinze at Haxtun and they moved to Chicago, Ill., while both attended Bethany Seminary until April of 1920. Upon leaving Chicago, they returned to the Haxtun community for three years. The couple then moved to their home on the family homestead near the Republican River where they engaged in farming and ranching. To this union were born three sons and one daughter.
On June 6-11, 1899, Joe accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior and was baptized into the Evangelical Lutheran Salem Church, Landsman, Arapahoe County, Colo., and was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Joe as a (mdp) willing and loyal ambassador for Christ, serving the Lord in any capacity required for his church, home, and community. He also was a support to his community as a school board member for many years.
Joe was a loving and considerate husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, devoting his entire life to the welfare, aspirations and hopes of his family. He not only enjoyed the earth as a tool for support but as well as for pleasure. His garden and fruit trees were his delight.
Mr. Lengel was preceded in death by his wife Mary and his parents, Jonathan and Elizabeth Lengel. He leaves to mourn, four children, Edgar and wife Arnetta; Galen and wife Virginia; Ruth Richards and husband Harry, all of Burlington; Wilbur and wife Maude of Elgin, Ill.; 19 grandchildren, Linda Fairchild and husband Craig of Castle Rock; Ray Richards and wife Susan of Burlington; Donna Gersten and husband Gene of Hurst, Tex.; Bonita Wise and husband Emmett of Kirk; Roger Richards and wife Susan of Idalia; Diana Lengel of Grand Prairie, Tex.; Katherine Adolf and husband Wesley of Joes; James Lengel and wife Patricia, all of Joes; Charlotte Richards of Wray; Ronald Lengel and wife Polly of Burlington; Donald Richards and wife Susan of Idalia; Denise Slater and husband Rick of Broomfield; Dennis Lengel and wife Laura of Kirk; Mark Lengel of Burlington; David, Lisa, Timothy, Lucinda and Todd Lengel, all of Elgin, Ill., and 18 great-grandchildren, Susan and Nancy Fairchild of Castle Rock; Gregory Wise of Kirk; Sarah and Mary Lengel of Joes; Darcy, Kristy and Katy Lengel of Burlington; Bradley Guersten of Hurst, Tex.; Gianina, James and Landon Burgess of Burlington; Chad, Brad and Duane Richards of Idalia; Jamie and Kimberly Adolf of Joes; Andrew Richards of Idalia.
Also surviving is sister, Anna Mills of Sterling, Kan.; brothers, John of LaSalle, and Charles of Windsor; Sister, Ida of Hays, Kan.; brothers Levi of LaSalle, and Ben of Burlington and a host of other relatives and friends.
