The family moved to Sioux City IA in 1885. The next year, Paul's father died. Paul was 12, the oldest, and went to work to help support his mother and 6 younger siblings.
He worked for the Bell Telephone during the time when the company was placing wires between Sioux City and Minneapolis. He was later employed by Sioux City Gas and Electric for 54 years as a stationary engineer.
In 1896, he married Laura Garman and they had two daughters, Daisy and Fern.
Paul lived to the age of 82.
