Anton Repking Family

Anton Repking, born Nov. 12, 1825, was a native of Oythe, amt Vechta, Oldenburg. He came to this country as a young man, and while working in Cincinnati, heard about "good ground" at Bishop Creek. He purchased 80 acres, sight unseen, in September 1848, for $400, and settled at Bishop. On Oct. 4, 1856, he married Elizabeth Sandschafer.

Elizabeth Sandschafer was born on March 3, 1837, in Coesfeld, Westphalia, Prussia, and emigrated to America with her family (Mr. and Mrs Bernard Sandschafer, nee Vosskuehler) when she was nine years old, arriving in New Orleans, traveling by steamboat to St Louis and, three months later, came by oxen team to settle at Bishop Creek.

Anton Repking was one of the "Building Committee" members which were charged with the task of building the community's first Church. The first child born to Anton and Elizabeth Repking was Sister Maria Theresia, ASC, born July 23, 1857. She entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood congregation in 1873 and became vicaress of the Ruma Convent in 1906. Other children were: Elizabeth (Mrs Joseph Westendorf, Kathryn (Mrs Tony Koester), Caroline (Mrs Joseph Niemerg), John, and Bernard. Seven children died in infancy. It is said that when the family returned from Church, where they had just buried one of their children, they found another child dead.

Anton and Elizabeth made their home with their son, John, on the farm home place at Bishop, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1906. Anton died on Oct. 10, 1907, at age 81, and Elizabeth died on May 20, 1926. at the age of 89.
