Jacob F. Riffel, was born July 30, 1911, in Russell to Fred and Elizabeth (Kraft) Riffel at their home at 749 East 4th Street in Russell, KS. He went to school in Russell and as a young man he worked in the bakery and meat shop. His death occurred Sept. 24, 2000, at Russell, KS, his age was 89 years, 1 month and 24 days.

He married Mabel Lois Brown from Dorrance, KS on Feb. 16, 1935, in Abilene, KS and made their home at 911 East 7th in Russell.

He began work in the oil field with Hartman & Blair in 1940. When Texaco bought Hartman & Blair, he continued to work for them. He retired from Texaco in 1974

He served in the US Navy from March 1943 until his honorable discharge as a Baker 1st Class in Nov. 1945 with a Victory Medal, American Theatre, and European-African-Middle East Ribbons. He was an active life member of the American Legion and the VFW, both of Russell. He served in the Legion Funeral Firing Squad and helped with grounds keeping at the American Legion baseball games.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mabel who died Jan. 6, 1982; three brothers, Emmanuel, Alex and Dave, and four sisters, Eva Riffel, Katherine Miller, Amelia Dougherty and Mollie Ebel.

His smile and good-nature will be missed by his son, Jerris, daughter-in-law Judith, grandsons Jonathan and Joshua; a sister, Mary (Riffel) Barnes; all of his nieces and nephews as well as everyone who knew him.

Services Sept. 28, 2000 at Pohlman´s Memorial Chapel, Russell, with the Rev. Glenn Tombaugh officiating; burial in the Russell City Cemetery.
