H.G. MANGELSDORF, 83, FORMER OIL EXECUTIVE
Harold G. Mangelsdorf, a petroleum industry executive who spent much of his 40-year career in senior positions with Standard Oil of New Jersey, now Exxon, died on Wednesday at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. He was 83 years old and lived in Short Hills, N.J. His family said he died of heart disease.
Mr. Mangelsdorf was with various units of Esso from 1934 until 1966, when he retired as president of the Esso Chemical Company. he then became chairman and chief executive of Crown Central Petroleum, finally retiring in 1974.
He was born in Atchison, Kans., and was a graduate of Kansas State College and held a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Harold and Carol Elizabeth Moore married in Protection, Kansas.
Mr. Mangelsdorf held senior positions with Standard Oil at refineries in Baton Rouge, La., and Bayway, N.J. After holding other management posts he became the first president of the Esso Chemical Company in 1963. Three years later he moved to Crown Central.
Surviving are two daughters; three sisters; seven granddaughters; two grandsons; and a great grandson.
He was predececeased by one son, David Harold Mangelsdorf.
