14-year-old Mary O’Toole won the Calhoun County spelling contest in 1896. Two years later as the Spanish-American War raged, she spoke to fellow students at a Battle Creek High School “chapel exercise” on “The Situation in the Orient.” In October 1898, she won the prize for “the finest head of hair” at the Calhoun County Fair in Marshall. She graduated from high school that year, then taught at Bouton School in Pennfield. After her marriage to Charles Maurer in 1900, the couple were very active in the Pennfield Farmers Club. She regularly spoke at the meetings on topics like “The Greatest Women in History” and “Use and Abuse of Christmas Giving.” She and Charles raised nine children to adulthood.
