Before moving to Davenport, Maurice and his wife Mildred lived in L'Anse, Michigan. He grew up on the family farm in Pennfield north of Battle Creek, Michigan. He was the salutatorian of the St. Philip Class of 1926. Before moving to Iowa, he spent many years working with young people as a teacher, camp counselor and scoutmaster. For a while, he also owned a Gamble's hardware store in Clinton, Illinois.
