Bernard Maurer grew up on the family farm near St. Mary's Lake in Pennfield north of Battle Creek. He graduated from St. Philip High School in 1932. Despite the mistaken date in the obituary, he graduated from Michigan State University in 1939. Maurer Drive in the Urbandale neighborhood of Battle Creek was named in his honor. He built many homes on that street and throughout the area. On Sept. 8, 1988, he was badly burned in an explosion at a rental home he owned in Battle Creek. Twenty-nine days later, he died of a heart attack.
