Elizabeth 'Betty' Hankes, 82, Moose Lake, entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 26, 2006 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. She was born on Oct. 24, 1923 to Charles and Mary Louise (O'Toole) Maurer in Battle Creek, Michigan where she grew up and attended school. On May 12, 1945, Betty married Orlo Hankes in Battle Creek. They moved to Little Falls where they lived until 1952 when they moved to Moose Lake. Betty worked as a clerk for the gas company in Moose Lake and later as a bookkeeper for Skelton Agency where she worked for over 28 years before retiring. She had been a member of the Moose Lake Co-op Board, PTA, and the Moose Lake Library Board. Betty was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church where she had been President of the Women's Guild. Betty was an avid bridge player and excellent cook. She enjoyed biking, gardening, sewing, and truly loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Orlo in 1984; four brothers, Francis Maurer, Maurice Maurer, Bernard Maurer, and Charles Maurer; five sisters, Louise Maurer, Mary Lucas Strickland, Katherine Wissbaum Mead, Barbara Borchert, and Cecelia Knapp. She will be lovingly remembered by three sons, Joseph (Karen) Hankes of Neenah, Wisc., James (Diane) Hankes of White Bear Lake, and Thomas (Joni) Hankes of Minneapolis; three daughters, Mary (Paul) Russo of Baton Rouge, La., Katherine (John) Hanson of Eden Prairie, and Patricia (Michael) Tuomi of Little Canada; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Painter, Jon Hankes, Theresa Wismer, Kelly Weight, Katherine Hankes, Michael Hankes, Matthew Hankes, Nathan Hankes, Michael Russo, Amy Russo, Christine Kelash, and Nicholas Hanson; a great grandson, Luke Painter; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2006 with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, March 30, 2006 in Holy Angels Catholic, Moose Lake.
