George A. Wirtz, devoted husband and loving father, age 86, of Nekoosa, WI died March 6, 2013 at Riverview Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM. Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nekoosa. Rev. William Menzel will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 until 11 AM. Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home of Nekoosa is assisting the family.
He was born September 3, 1926 in Wood County, son of the late Nicolas Joseph and Rose (Kundert) Wirtz. On April 23, 1949 he married Betty Larsen; she preceded him in death on December 22, 2010.
George worked at Nepco Mill for 35 years on the Service Crew, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars, trucks and tractors.
Survivors include his five children: Gregory (Sandy) Wirtz, Wisconsin Rapids, Jeannette (Alan) Smorynski, Greenleaf, Juanita (Michael) Yost, Brookfield, Sheila (Michael) Winegarden, Nekoosa, and Jeffery (Mary) Wirtz, Port Edwards; 9 grandchildren: Christine (Dennis) Duda, Wisconsin Rapids, Heather Wirtz, Gardner, MT, Jason Smorynski, Greenleaf, Sarah (Chad) Stormoen, Davenport, IA, Nathan Winegarden, Port Washington, Michelle (Jason) Tyson, Island Lake, IL, Jacqueline (Matt) Patterson, Mufreesboro, TN, Jessica (Scott) Nelson, Elkhorn, Jennifer Wirtz, St. Paul, MN, and 14 great grandchildren; eight siblings, Genevieve (Roy) Wenzel, Theresa Arnold, Isabella Acott, Clarence Wirtz, Richard (Barbara) Wirtz, Jerome(Sue) Wirtz, Frances Albrecht, and Joanne (John) Hackman.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Wirtz, and sisters Ann DeFillips and Marie Graveen.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established
