Jake J. "PaPa" Degand, 84, Topeka, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 1994 at the home of a granddaughter, Judy Wilder, in Topeka. He was born March 14, 1910 in Portland, Ore., the son of John and Catherine Hefner Degand.


He lived in Chicago before he moved to Topeka in 1943. He worked at the Topeka Supply Depot and later was a boiler fireman at Santa Fe Hospital 20 years before he retired in 1972. Mr. Degand was a member of the Catholic faith.


He was married to Katie Faulkner O'Neal May 23, 1943. She died Feb. 7, 1972. He later married Ethel Baxter. She died April, 24, 1987.


Other survivors include a brother, Mike Degand, Topeka; a sister, Catherine Navarre, Topeka; three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.


Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery. Mr. Degand will lie in state after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, 200 Frazier Circle.
