John E. DeSutter, 92, of rural Manito passed away at 6:36 A.M. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Unity Point Methodist Hospital in Peoria. He was born October 31, 1923 near Manito the son of August and Erma M. Leers DeSutter. He married Geraldine Compton on March 23, 1946 and she preceded him in death on July 19, 1976. He later married Joan Marie Groenhagen Kitchell on January 31, 1981 in Mount Sterling and she survives. One daughter Melva Kitchell of Meredosia and one granddaughter Nikki Bradshaw also survives. Eleven brothers and sisters Clara, Bertha, Ervina, Louis, Rudy, Mabel, Charles, Kamel, Matilda, Frank, and Betty preceded him in death.

John farmed in the Manito-Springlake area all his adult life and retired from farming in 1994. He was a member of the Hill-Palmer American Legion Post of Manito, the Moose Lodge # 916, the Elks Lodge # 1271, Tazewell Co. Farm Bureau and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.

Funeral services will be 10 A.M. Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Maas-Hurley Funeral Home in Manito. John Sherwood will deliver the eulogy and Rev. Scott Sherwood will officiate. Visitation will be 6-8 P.M. Friday, July 22, 2016 at the funeral home. Internment will be in Meadow Lawn Cemetery Manito. Military rites will be conducted by the Tazewell Co. Ceremonial Team and the Hill-Palmer American Legion post of Manito. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to the Forman Ambulance Service or to the Forman Fire Dept. both of Manito.
