Death of Peter Larson
April 22, 1922

Last Saturday at about 11 a.m., Peter Larson, an old and highly esteemed citizen of Massena, passed away suddenly after a several days illness of pneumonia. The funeral was held Monday p.m. at 2 o'clock at the Church of Christ, Rev. Victor Johnson officiating. Interment in Victoria cemetery.

The church was filled to capacity by lifelong friends and neighbors who knew the deceased as a loyal friend and man of sterling integrity. Rev. Mr. Johnson paid a fine tribute to his fine character and citizenship. The floral offerings were numerous.

Peter Larson was born in Norway January 21, 1843. He came to the U. S. in 1870 and in 1875 located in Adams county, Iowa. He settled in Victoria township in 1882. He was married in Norway to Marie Anderson who preceded him in death 20 years ago. To them were born 2 sons and 7 daughters. The surviving children are: Lewis of Conway, Iowa, Mrs. Tillie Ramsey, of Mt. Etna, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Johnson and Miss Clara of Massena, Mrs. Katie Beik of Albany, New York, and Emma of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Andrew, Julia, and Nettie are deceased. Mr. Larson was a member of the Lutheran church.

Retired Farmer of Massena is Ill But a Short Time

Special to The Noonpareil.

MASSENA, Ia., April 25 - Peter Larson died at his home Saturday after a brief illness. He was 79 years old. He was born in Norway, but had lived in Cass county for a long time. He retired from his farm near here about nine years ago. His wife did about twenty years ago. To them were born eight children, Lewis of Conway, Ia., Mrs. Elsworth Ramsey of Bridgewater, Mrs. Martin Johnston of Massena, Mrs. A. K. Beik of Missouri, Miss Clara at home, and Andrew and Mrs. Peter Stender, deceased. The funeral will be held at the Christian church with Victor Johnson of Bridgewater, a former pastor, in charge.

Peter Larson was born in 1843 in Norway and lived in Soknedal. He was the son of Lars and Julia Peterson Larson. Peter worked in Norway's mines and on its railroad until 1869, when he came to the United States to La Salle County, Illinois. In 1869 he was married to Anna Marie Anderson, also from Norway, at Leland, Illinois.

Peter farmed and the couple had nine children: Lewis, Andrew, and Julia, born in Illinois; and Matilda, Mary, Clara, Nettie, Katie and Emma born in Iowa. He dug wells by hand and worked for an English farmer during his first years in America.

In 1874 the family went by wagon train to Iowa, crossing the Mississippi river at Davenport, Iowa. The wagon train disbanded in Adams county, Iowa. Peter rented a farm in a Norwegian settlement west of Corning, Iowa. The Larson family soon moved to Cass county where they bought a farm in Victoria township, southwest of Massena, Iowa. He lived there until he moved into Massena. Peter's wife died in 1902 and he died in 1922.
