Irwin was born in Brecknock Township to Norman and Amy (Shirk) Messner. He worked in conjunction with the blind association making hand woven baskets. He was a member of the Jehovan Witnesses and the Susquehanna Blind Association. Surviviors include one son, one daughter, three grandsons, four great grandchildren, and three brothers. A son, Steven M. Messner, preceded him in death.
