Alex John Bellender, 91, of Mason City, Iowa, died March 29, 2011, in Rockwell, Iowa. Funeral services were held April 1 at Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. Interment was at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Mr. Bellender was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Sterling to Alex and Susan (Monheiser) Bellender. He was baptized into the Catholic faith in Sterling and attended school in Padroni.

He farmed for many years.

On Dec. 19, 1954, he married Bernadine Garrett in Greeley.

They moved to Iowa in 1966. He joined the Schwann Co., being a route builder for the company across Iowa.

They enjoyed taking their children and grandchildren camping and fishing and traveling to bluegrass festivals.

Mr. Bellender enjoyed cutting and polishing stones. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the North End Center, Habitat for Humanity, and helped build stands at the fairgrounds. In 1992, he received the Governor's Award for his participation.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadene; two daughters, Alexis Bohman of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Benadette Ginapp and husband Darrell of Rockwell; mother-in-law, Irene Baird of Boulder City, Neb.; six grandchildren, Kristen Buseman, Heather Roth, Wyatt, Katelin and twins Trevor and Keegan Ginapp; four great-grandchildren, Cain Roth, Zachary, Olivia and Samantha Buseman; two sisters, Annie Fowler of North Glen, and Catherine Bellendir of Sterling; two brothers, Robert Bellendir and Joe Bellendir, both of Sterling; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Marry Loos; and 10 brothers, Tony, Jake, Andrew, John, George, Phillip, Lawrence, Adam, Pete and Steve Bellendir
