Marshfield News-Herald, Obituary, 1 Jul 1944.
John Wechorek
Petty Officer Harold Wechorek, U. S. N., who arrived home from Guadalcanal on leave Tuesday, looking forward to a promised fishing trip with his father, John J. Wechorek, found the latter dying at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Mr. Wechorek, 50, of 708 W. Arnold Street, died at the hospital Friday night after having been a patient there for several days. He had been ill for some time but the son had not heard of his illness before reaching home.
John Jacob Wechorek was born at Manistee, Michigan on November 24, 1893 and came to Ripon, Wisconsin with his parents Albert and Mary (Wieczorek) Wechorek in 1900. They later came to the Hewitt community near here, where they settled on a farm and where John Wechorek attended school.
He entered the employ of the North Western Railroad at an early age, but joined the army during World War I and served in France for 13 months. He returned to railroad work for a short time after the war and then sought other occupation.
He was married to Mary Zenner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church here on 29 June 1920.
Durring the Great Depression, John took work with Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Mr. Wechorek was made the chief engineer at the Willard D. Purdy Junior High School where he was working at the time of his death, having become a janitor there 10 years ago. His death was attributed to catching a case of pheumonia while installing the new refrigeration system in the school. Prior to that he was employed at the Consumers Store for eight years.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Petty Officer Harold, USN, and Irene at home; also by his father, Albert Wechorek, Marshfield; two brothers, Edward of St. Louis, Missouri and Martin, Fond du Lac; and two sisters, Mrs. William (Lucille) Scanell and Miss Elizabeth, both of Chicago.
His mother died on May 23, 1935 and three sisters also preceded him in death. Funeral rites will be conducted at St. John's Catholic Church Monday, with the Rev. Raymond Bornbach officiating and burial will take place in the family lot at Hillside (Gate of Heaven) cemetery. Meanwhile the body will lie in state at the Rembs Funeral Home.
Mr. Wechorek was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Catholic Order of foresters.
The Foresters will attend a rosary service at the funeral home Sunday and a general rosary will be held Sunday. The V. F. W. will have charge of military rites at the grave.
