Ben Schnabel, county official 15 years, dies
Benjamin L. Schnabel, who served a total of 15 years as Jefferson County auditor and assessor, died at 6 p.m. Thursday at King's Daughters' Hospital. He was 62.
A native of Madison, he had lived in the community all of his life. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Walnut Street Volunteer Fire Company No. 4.
Schnabel was owner of the former Schnabel Meat Market and operated it until 1962 when he entered county politics. He was elected that year as Jefferson County auditor and served in that post for two terms until 1970.
That year he ran for and was elected to the office of Jefferson County Assessor a position he held until Dec. 31, 1977, when he resigned because of ill health.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Dew Schnabel, 205 East St.; one son, Stephen, at home; two daughters: Mrs. Mary Helen Hill, Madison; and Mrs. Karen Smikel, California; three brothers: Gil, Boonton, N. J.; Raymond, Arizona; and William, Madison; two sisters: Mrs. Bernice Douglass, Madison; and Mrs. Alice Adams, Rising Sun; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gans Funeral Home with burial in Springdale Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. today.
The Walnut Street Volunteer Fire Company No. 4 will hold memorial services at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
