David C. Mathiesen, the son of Gottlieb and Louise Mohr Mathiesen, was born July 28, 1905 at Lincoln, NE. He died Saturday, August 7, 1993 at Heartland Care Center in Belleville, KS, at the age of 88 years and 9 days.

David was baptized August 25, 1905 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 20, 1919 at the age of 14. David was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Belleville, KS, at the time of his death.

David was one of ten children of Gottlieb and Louise Mathiesen. The family moved to Chester, Thayer County, Nebraska in 1914. He attended the (sic) received his education in the Chester Public Schools. David was united in marriage to Francis Ida Lehman on November 16, 1926. To this union three children were born, Norma Jean, Verdell and Geraldean.

David and his family operated a farm in the Chester area, both in the states of Nebraska and Kansas. He was a farmer and stockman during his active years in agriculture. During the depression David worked for the WPA and worked for area farmers in Thayer County, Nebraska and Republic County, Kansas baling and hauling hay.

Upon retirement from farming David and Francis founded the Evergreen Recreation area on their farm for camping and fishing. He and his wife were well known for their truck garden vegetables which they sold at the Evergreen Recreation area and David was well known for the catfish he raised at his catfish farm on the recreation area. David and Francis later sold the recreation area and moved to Fairbury, NE, for two years and then moved to Belleville, where they resided until their deaths.

David enjoyed reunions, picnics and he was especially fond of the Fourth of July. He loved playing with his grandchildren and he enjoyed telling them stories, reading poems and singing songs.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Gottlieb and Louise Mathiesen; his wife Francis on October 31, 1986; one son-in-law, Therman Brunsilius on January 25, 1985; six brothers and sisters.

He is survived by daughter Mrs. Norma Jean Brunsilius, Belleville; one son, Verdell A. Mathiesen and wife Lillian, Belleville; and one daughter, Mrs. Geraldean Graham and husband Harold of Topeka; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Thomasen, Hebron, Mrs. Katherine Burton, Belleville, and Mrs. Helen Sellars, Brownsville, TX; also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Services were held Wednesday, August 11, 1993, 2 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Belleville, with Reverend Sidney Flack officiating. Interment was held at the Belleville City Cemetery, Belleville. Music was provided by Mr. Ron Fuller who was accompanied by Candie Snyder. Casket bearers were Larry Brunsilius, Steven Graham, David Mathiesen, Morris Brunsilius, Ron Graham, Douglas Mathiesen, Chris Fuller and Gabriel Snyder.
