Henry Mathiesen, son of Gottlieb and Louise Mohr Mathiesen was born on November 8, 1898 at Stole, Russia and passed away on April 22, 1989 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 14 days.
He was one of ten children and came to the United States with his family at the age of six months to settle in Lincoln, Nebr. He moved to Chester with his family in 1914.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of 12 and later attended the Methodist church (sic) of Chester.
He received his education in the Lincoln and Chester public schools and attended mechanic school in Kansas City.
He operated a garage and farmed in the Chester area for most of his life. He had served as fire chief of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Chester City Council, and was a member of the Chester Community Club..
He was united in marriage to Marie Jones, May 2, 1922, and to this union two children were born, LaVerne and George. His wife died in 1934.
He was united in marriage to Clara Pearl Harrington (sic) in 1935 and to this union six children were born, Carol, Rosalie, Marilyn, Marilee, Betty June and Shirley. His wife died in 1969.
He was united in marriage to Rose Allen on December 29, 1970.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, George in 1929; two daughters, Shirley in 1949, and Betty June in 1951; two brothers, Paul and John.
He is survived by his wife, Rose of Chester; five daughters, Mrs. LaVerne Palecek, Munden, Mrs. Carol Lucas, Houston, Tex., Mrs. Rosalie Higel, Gering, Nebr., Mrs. Marilyn Anderson, Hayward, Calif.,, Mrs. Marilee Huff, Greenville, Sou. Car.; two stepsons, Fred and Gordon Allen, Ontario, Canada; one brother, David Mathiesen of Belleville; four sisters, Mrs. Mollie Thomasen, Mrs. Katherine Burton, Chester, Mrs. Carolyn Anderson and Mrs. Helen Sellars, Brownsville, Tex.; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 25 at the Chester United Methodist Church of Chester, conducted by Rev. Truman Bachenberg. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery.
