She received her education in Rural Jefferson School, Lincoln, NE, and Dry Creek School, rural Chester. She was united in marriage to James Andrew Burton on Sept. 12, 1922 at Lincoln, and to this union three children were born, Russell, Melva and Elizabeth. She had been a long time area resident. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, and the Happy Hour Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gottlieb and Louisa Mathiesen; husband, James A. Burton; one daughter, Elizabeth; four brothers, John, Paul, Henry, David, and one sister, Caroline.
She is survived by one son, Russell Burton and his wife Marilyn, Belleville, KS; one daughter, Melva J. Corser, Simi Valley, CA; two sisters, Mollie Thomasen, Hebron, NE and Helen Sellers, Brownsville, TX; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, six step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Friday, June 9, 1995, 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, NE, conducted by Pastor William Larsen. Don Wassom was soloist and Mrs. Betty Poppe, organist. Casket bearers were Max Derowitsch, Alan Porter, Walter Poppe, Alvin Poppe and Neal Eickman. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery, Chester, NE.
