Katharine Louise Mathiesen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mohr, was born in Stepnaja, Russia, on July 8, 1871. She was married to Gottlieb Mathiesen in 1891. Ten children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. She came to this country in 1900, living at first in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1914, the family moved to a farm near Chester. She moved into town about 1930.

She had been in failing health for some time. Suffering a stroke, she failed to rally and passed away on Thursday, September 5, at 11:00 p.m. at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 28 days.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in infancy and confirmed as a youth. She had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester for many years.

Mrs. Mathiesen leaves to mourn her death her husband and eight children: Gottlieb John of Dillingham, Alaska; Mrs. Mollie Thomassen of Hebron; Henry of Chester; Mrs. Katherin Burton of Chester; Paul of Black Foot, Idaho; David of Belleville; Mrs. Helen Seller of Mercedes, Texas; and Mrs. Carolyn Anderson of Oakland, California. Other survivors include 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two brothers, one of whom, Emil, lives in Chester, and another brother who lives in Russia, as do also two sisters. Her passing is also mourned by a host of friends, many of whom she assisted at various times.

Funeral services were held in St. John's Lutheran Church on Monday afternoon. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
