Darlene Woodson passed away October 23, 2018, at the age of 93, in Stanwood, Wash. Darlene was born January 15, 1925 in Russell, Kansas to parents George and Beatrice Rein.
She was the youngest of nine children born and raised on the family farm in the Pioneer School District of Russell. Darlene graduated from Russell High School and then went on to receive a bachelor's degree in business from Kansas State University at Manhattan. It was there that she met her future husband, Robert Woodson, on a blind date.
Bob and Darlene married on August 31, 1947 and had two children, Carol and Cynthia. The family moved to San Diego, Calif., in 1955 where Bob held teaching positions at both Marston and Hale Junior High schools and also played violin in the San Diego Symphony.
Darlene was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker for her family. She also gave generously of her time to Girl Scouts, the PTA, Meals on Wheels and her church, the University City United Church of Christ.
Darlene and Bob loved to travel, visiting many different countries before Bob passed away in 1987. Darlene continued on to share that passion for traveling with her family by taking her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren on many memorable family trips.
In 2012 Darlene moved to the Brookdale retirement home in Stanwood, to be closer to her daughter Carol. In spite of having to deal with the ravages of Alzheimer's disease, Darlene's pleasant nature, kind spirit and zest for life won her many friends in her new home. The family would like to thank the Brookdale staff and Providence Hospice Care Team for the kind and loving care they all bestowed upon Darlene in her final years, months and days.
Darlene is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Bruce) Williams and Cynthia (David) Javitz; her four grandchildren, Jennifer, Diane, Kevin and Steven and her three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brenna and Emma. She also is survived by one sister, Helen Lockyer, of Eugene, Ore., and many nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Remembrances in Darlene's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
