s/o Daniel Werner & Caroline W. Zierke. Christened on Jun 10, 1849 in Lobsens, Kries Wirsitz, Posen, Prussia. Arrived in America about 1880, occupation blacksmith. Married Louisa W. "Lizzie" Brunsick on Nov 5, 1886, in Sibley County.

His father, Daniel, died in Schmilowo, Kries Flatow, West Prussia on Jan 25, 1870. August had eleven siblings, three died young in Dreidorf; Friedrich, Wilhelmine, and Johann. Bertha arrived in Castle Garden (predecessor to Ellis Island), NYC on May 10, 1873. She was married and was living in Henderson, Sibley Co., in 1875. Hermann moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1878 with his wife and two children from Prussia. Pauline arrived in Castle Garden on May 23, 1874, Caroline, Ferdinand, and twins, Charlotte and Auguste, arrived on Apr 7, 1877. By 1885 Caroline, August, Ferdinand, and one of the twins, Charlotte, settled in Sibley and Redwood Counties, MN. Pauline and the other twin, Auguste, had settled in San Francisco, CA. Two children: (maybe) Frederick and William, round out the siblings to twelve.

On March 30, 1876, August Werner, age 26, occupation laborer, arrived at Castle Garden Immigration island, New York Harbor, on the "S.S. Kenilworth" from Antwerp. He listed his home country as Germany and his previous place of residence as Alsace-Lorraine. Terry Goettl, a family member, told me that August had been a German soldier with the occupation forces in the Franco-Prussian War in Alsace-Lorraine. Alsace and Lorraine, French provinces on the German border, were annexed as German province Alsace-Lorraine to Germany by Emperor Wilhelm I. Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig, the Prussian king, united the German-speaking provinces into one country, called Germany, under his leadership as self-proclaimed Emperor Wilhelm I. If I remember the story correctly, August had met Louisa in Alsace-Lorraine, but they did not marry until they arrived in America.
