LAUREL - Alfred Adam "Joe" Krug, 84, of Laurel went home to live with his Savior on Thursday Sept. 3, 2009.
Adam was born on March 11, 1925, to John Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Maier) Krug in a farmhouse south of Laurel. He was baptized, confirmed and married in St. John's Lutheran Church of Laurel. He was educated at the Byam School.
On March 27, 1954, he married Marion Joan Hart and the couple was blessed with three children. In March 2009, they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
He was in the farming business with family all of his life. In 1948, he, a sister, and his brothers started Krug Brothers Sand and Gravel. They were in that business together for 25 years.
At age 21, he took the position of secretary to the voters of St. John's Lutheran Church and continued in that position for 17 years. He served as a church elder for six years and was on the board of finance six years. He also taught Sunday school for three years and was a choir member for 15 years.
At age 17, he taught himself how to play the harmonica, then the guitar, mandolin and violin. He began entertaining in public at age 18 at the Byam School. Later he formed a band with his brother, Jake, and Fred Vogel. The group played for weddings and public dances all over the area for about 20 years.
Krug also enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He skillfully crafted many items for family and friends during the winter months. He passed on his woodworking skills to his two sons.
Those preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Mary Frickel, Mollie Gomer, Annie Nielson, and Elizabeth McLaughlin; brothers, Alec Krug, Jacob Krug, John Krug and infant great-grandson, Timothy Mauger.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; two sons, Douglas (Pat) and Dennis (Sharon), all of Laurel; a daughter, Laurie (Mark) Calvert of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Darci Krug of Billings, Kelsey (Jonathan) Mauger of Newberry, S.C., Lindsey Krug of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sara, Katie and Scott Calvert of Colorado Springs; a step-grandchild, Michelle (Gary) Dawson of Billings, and three great-grandchildren, Jayden, Emma, and Jaxson Mauger. He is also survived by his brothers, George, Henry and William Krug; his sisters, Esther Krug and Martha Kohl and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church. Internment will be at Laurel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church of Laurel or a charity of the donor's choice. Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel.
We will miss you dad, more than words can say. Your loss has left a tremendous hole in the hearts of us all. We're thankful for the wonderful memories of your love and laughter, until we meet again.
