Gottlieb John Mathiesen was born in Russia on June 22, 1866. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He was united in marriage to Louise Mohr on May 25, 1891. In 1900 he and his wife and family came to the United States and settled in Lincoln, Nebr. He came to the Chester community from Lincoln in 1914. He worked as a farmer until he moved to Chester, where he and his wife resided in their later years.

To Mr. and Mrs. Mathiesen were born ten children, two of them preceded their parents in death. His wife passed away in 1957. Mr. Mathiesen passed away Thursday, December 27, 1962 at the age of 96 years, 6 months and 5 days.

Surviving him are eight of his children: John of Alaska, Molly Thomasson of Hebron, Henry of Chester, Katherine Burton of Chester, David of Belleville, Kan., Hellen Sellars of Beeville, Tex., Paul of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Carolyn Anderson of Oakland, California. He also leaves a brother, Pete Mathiesen of Chester, a sister in Fresno, Calif., and a brother-in-law, Emil Mohr of Chester; as well as a large number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Mathiesen and his family became members of St. John Lutheran Church on their arrival in Chester in 1914.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 30, 1962, at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Donald Patterson officiating. Music was provided by Walter Firnhaber organist. Singers were Norma Flathmann and Karen Firnhaber. Casket bearers were Verdell Mathiesen, Russell Burton, Warren Meyers, Raymond Thomassen, Ed Palacek, Thayerman Brunsilius. Interment was in St. John Lutheran cemetery (sic).
