Peter Stender of Cumberland Dies

Peter Stender, 84, died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Greenfield Hospital as the result of a stroke he suffered last March.

He was born January 5, 1873 at Kankakee, IL, the son of William and Trena Stender and came with his parents at the age of four to Adams County, Iowa. Six years later the family moved to South Dakota where his parents died and Peter came back to Iowa to live with an uncle, Peter Anderson, near this vicinity.

On February 16, 1898 he was married to Julia Larson who died February 11, 1918. Mr. Stender farmed in the Massena and Corning area until retiring and moving to Cumberland in 1940. He was a member of the Massena Methodist church and the Masonic lodge of Cumberland.

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Frank Boos, Mrs. Floyd Chester, and Johnny Stender, all of Cumberland; Mrs. Albert Holcomb of Cedar Rapids; and Arlene Stender at home. Two children, James and Alice, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cumberland Christian church with the Rev. Frank Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Victoria Center cemetery. The remains will be in state at Hodges Funeral home until the service hour.
