Dr. Lawrence A. Abler, 75, of Selinsgrove, Pa., formerly of Mt. Calvary, died on Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996, due to drowning in last weekend's flood in Pennsylvania.

He was born on Dec. 22, 1920, in Mt. Calvary, a son of Mathias and Anna Bleuel Abler. He attended Holy Cross Catholic grade school in Mt. Calvary and Fond du Lac Senior High School. He graduated from University of Wisconsin, with both bachelors and masters degrees in literature. He received his doctorate at Occidental College in 1958.

Dr. Abler served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a corporal in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. He taught literature at Occidental College, Arizona State College and Juniata College before joining the faculty at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove in 1968.

He was head of the English department from 1970 to 1975, and received a professorship in 1973. Dr. Abler taught at Susquehanna University until his retirement. He also was the author of several literary articles.

Survivors include four sisters, Lucy Mertens and her husband Ernest, Cordula Wagner and her husband Edmund, and Genevieve Abler, all of fond du Lac, and Patricia Abler of Milwaukee, and nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mt. Calvary, with the Rev. Peter Kutch officiating. Burial will be at the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
